Excel in finance for advanced

The course fills the gap between substantive knowledge in the field of finance and company management and knowledge related to the advanced use of Microsoft Excel.
The proposed workshop is three days of intensive classes.

Target group

Excel in finance – for advanced users, intended for financiers, accountants, analysts working in controlling departments, and other people from financial departments who intensively use spreadsheets, know and work with MS Excel on a daily basis.

Training methods

The course is conducted using modern, interactive methods, using a multimedia projector, with the active involvement of participants. All exercises are conducted based on examples taken from practice. Despite presenting complex substantive knowledge, the classes are conducted in an understandable way, ensuring that each course participant absorbs the knowledge provided.
Each participant receives a set of materials and electronic copies with all exercises conducted as part of the course and sample Microsoft Excel sheets.

Training program

The workshop program includes, among others, the following topics:

  • A short comparison of Excel versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, file types, program development, differences and common features, communication between different spreadsheet versions, specificity of using the application in the company’s financial services
  • Optimal “personalization” of the work program, advanced Excel settings options
  • Using local and global valid names on one sheet, declaring dynamic names, using names in formulas
  • Conditional formatting, application variants, editing, use of formulas in conditional formatting
  • Multiple nesting of functions, array formulas, numerical constants
  • Use of Excel functions from the categories: mathematical, date and time, search and address, databases, financial, financial, logical, text, information
  • Formula inspection, error checking
  • Technologies for downloading data from external sources (Excel data sources, database queries, using the MS Query module, downloading data from various sources, using the Internet – data in XML format)
  • Using pivot tables as a business data analysis tool, principles of creating pivot tables
  • Create and modify PivotTables based on different data sources, custom calculated fields, data grouping, custom data formatting in PivotTables, conditional formatting in PivotTable
  • Database functions, examples of practical applications, selection of criteria, alternative and conjunction of criteria
  • Import of data from text files to Excel – analysis of text data, automation of data refreshing.
  • Sheet protection, workbook protection, data validation
  • Optimizing solutions to complex problems using Solver, forecasting
  • Speeding up work thanks to Excel templates, templates with macro commands
  • Creating electronic forms in Excel, using control elements in the forms (lists, drop-down lists, buttons, knobs)
  • Recording, running and editing macros
    • Using the Visual Basic module – Tools from the toolbar
    • Main elements of the VBA editor window
    • Basic security rules – security level, messages, warnings, macro viruses
    • Rules for creating macros while recording
    • Macro location and availability
    • Macros with relative references (performing actions from the active cell) and absolute references ((performing actions in the same cells)
    • Various launch methods (buttons, toolbar, commands in ribbon tabs)
    • Dividing long macros into procedures, scheduling recording for optimal macro playback, testing macros
  • Using the Microsoft Visual Basic module to design advanced objects, build your own applications in Excel, build your own functions, create add-ins
  • Consolidation of data from different sheets, different methods of consolidationÂĴÂĴ
  • Organization of work with Excel in a computer network: simultaneous work of many users on one sheet, combining sheets and workbooks via a computer network, merging data from many sheets
  • Graphical presentation of financial data using charts (complex charts, charts presenting multiple data series, trend analysis on a chart, non-standard charts, charts based on data from pivot tables),
  • Building multi-variant models using scenarios, scenario summaries

After completing the training, participants will be able to apply the acquired knowledge to creative data analysis and to build models thanks to which decision-making will be based on reliable and accurate data.
