Excel in a manager’s practice

The proposed workshop is two days of very intensive classes, giving advanced knowledge in the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for analysis and broad business information management.

Target group

The training group is up to 12 people.

Training methods

The course is conducted with modern, interactive methods, using a multimedia projector, with the active involvement of participants. All exercises are conducted on the basis of examples taken from practice. The classes, despite the presentation of complex factual knowledge, are conducted in an understandable manner, ensuring the assimilation of the transmitted knowledge by each participant of the course (regardless of previous experience with Microsoft Excel).

Each participant receives a set of materials and electronic copies with all exercises conducted in the course and sample Microsoft Excel worksheets.

Training program

The workshop program includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Excel once and today – history of program development, versions, differences and common features, Comparison of Excel versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 to 2019
  • Excel file types, file conversions
  • Optimal “personalization” of Excel for work
  • External data – “manager’s view” – what to expect – how data should be prepared and analyzed , data types, data sources, building queries, saving and editing queries, analyzing external data, automating work,
  • Technologies for retrieving data from external sources (Excel data sources, database queries, use of MS Query module, retrieving data in XML format) – good data preparation practices – approach to the problem
  • Importing, organizing and analyzing data from text files into Excel
  • Tools for filtering, sorting, intermediate totals in data analysis. Elements of conditional formatting. Data validation (data validation).
  • Effective creation and modification of pivot tables based on various data sources, custom calculation fields, data grouping, custom data formatting in pivot tables
  • Using pivot tables as a business data analysis tool
  • Advanced data analysis in a pivot table, ways to represent and analyze data, calculation fields, use of the INSERTTABLE function, the role of the fragmenter in a pivot table, pivot charts
  • Conditional formatting in a pivot table
  • Data presentations, charts, composite charts, time progression charts
  • Using local and global valid names on one workbook
  • Conditional formatting, application variants
  • Data security – sheet protection, workbook protection, data validation
  • Database functions, examples of practical applications, selection of criteria, alternative and conjunction of criteria
  • Formula inspection tools, formula estimation, error checking
  • Automating calculations with user-built functions, using them in other worksheets, creating add-ons.
  • Optimize solutions to complex problems using Solver add-in
  • Speeding up work with templates
  • Streamlining and optimizing work through the use of macros, recording, running and editing macros, splitting long macros into procedures, scheduling macro recording for optimal playback, macros with relative and absolute reference
  • Data consolidations, consolidation options, editing sheet links
  • Elements of group work – organization of work with Excel in a computer network: simultaneous work of multiple users on one sheet, merging sheets and workbooks using a computer network, merging data from multiple sheets
  • Building multivariate models using scenarios
  • Graphical presentation of data using charts (composite charts, charts presenting multiple data series, trend analysis on a chart, custom charts, charts based on data from pivot tables, time progression charts), “chart dynamics in Excel”

Benefits of training

After completing the training, participants will be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired to creative data analysis and to build models to make decisions based on reliable and accurate data. Learning advanced techniques for using Microsoft Excel will make daily work easier and more effective.
